Dr. Don Ajith Rohana Colonne is a student of Ananda College (Colombo), Thurstan College (Colombo) and Ananda Sastralaya (Kotte) in Sri Lanka. From 1974 to 1975, he attended the Loveland High School in Colorado, USA under the American Field Service (AFS) Cultural Exchange Scholarship Programme and graduated from there.
Upon his return to Sri Lanka in 1975, he entered the University of Colombo and got a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1979. Subsequently, he obtained the Master of Business Administration Degree from the Postgraduate Institute of Management (PIM) of the University of Sri Jayawardenepura in 1994 and the Master of Arts in Economics Degree from the University of Colombo in 1996. In 2014 he obtained the Doctor of Philosophy degree from the International University of America.
Dr. Colonne started his working career in 1979 as an Instructor in Engineering Mathematics at the University of Peradeniya. Then he joined the prestigious IBM World Trade Corporation in Sri Lanka and worked there for 13 years. At the time he left IBM in 1992, he was a Senior Staff Analyst. While pursuing his postgraduate studies from 1991 to 1996, he became a Licensed Investment Advisor in the Stock Market and a Promoter of Financial, Investment, and Insurance products. Also, he worked as a Consultant to the National Savings Bank and to the National Enterprise Bank, during the said period.
He encountered the most significant turning-point in his career when he accidentally became a Visiting Lecturer in Management at the Sir John Kotalawala Defence University (KDU), in 1996. Since then, he had been a Visiting Lecturer in both Management and in Economics to numerous prestigious academic institutes in Sri Lanka such as the KDU, the University of Colombo, the PIM, the Institute of Chartered Accountants, the Institute of Bankers, the National Institute of Business Management etc.
In 1998, Dr. Colonne was appointed as a Deputy Director of the Directorate of Internal Intelligence – DII (formerly known as the National Intelligence Bureau – NIB and presently known as the State Intelligence Service - SIS) of the Ministry of Defence, which he considers to be the most significant opportunity in his career. After leaving the DII, he had two other short engagements as the Senior Trade Representative for Sri Lanka at the Australian High Commission and as the Director – Administration & Corporate Affairs at the Institute of Policy Studies. In 2002, he took up two political appointments as the Chairman of the Vocational Training Authority (VTA) and as the Chairman of the National Apprentice & Industrial Training Authority (NAITA), the latter which he held until 2004. Also, he worked as the Advisor on Intelligence Analysis to the Directorate of Internal Intelligence of the Ministry of Defence from 2003 to 2005, at an honorary capacity.
Dr. Colonne devotes a considerable amount of his time doing national service by conducting a series of highly specialized lectures on Decision Making and Intelligence Analysis to the members of the armed forces and the police and also teaches Business Economics and Decision Making in numerous local and foreign postgraduate courses, held in Sri Lanka. Further, he is indulged in educating the school children, youth and the general public, at an honorary capacity, in addition to conducting Cognitive Employee Development Programmes for the employees of the corporate sector. He is the Director – Academic Studies of the Sri Lanka Institute of Training and Development, also at an honorary capacity.
